Saw Palmetto BerriesSaw Palmetto is a small palm found along the coast of the southeastern United States. Its botanical name is Serenoa repens. It normally reaches a height of between 2 - 4 metres. It is a very hearty plant, but extremely slow growing, and long lived, with some plants, especially in Florida, possibly being as old as 500-700 years. Saw Palmetto produces yellow flowers and reddish black berries. It is the berries from which the Saw Palmetto extract is taken. The berries themselves are very high in Fatty Acids and Phytosterols. The fruit is taken from the plant, partially dried, and then broken down with a solvent such as hexane or ethanol. The most commonly studied Saw Palmetto product is Permixon.

Saw Palmetto extract is a popular herbal preparation used in alternative medicine. It is commonly used for benign prostate enlargement but has also been used for handling other conditions. Traditionally it has been used as a tonic for general weakness, recovery from illness and urogenital problems.

Saw Palmetto PalmIt also acts as a digestive tonic, improving the appetite, digestion and assimilation of nutrients. It's greatest effects appear to be on both the male and female organs. It is said to enlarge wasted organs, such as the breasts, ovaries, and testicles. Ironically it also reduces the pathologically enlarged prostate. In other words it acts to recreate a normal condition of organs, whether that means and increase in size when the organs are underdeveloped or atrophied or a decrease in size when the organ is pathologically large.

There have been a limited number of animal studies which suggest that Saw Palmetto has an anti-tumor action and could aid in the treatment of cancer. However no human trials have been recorded to date.
